I’m flinging it into Obscurity! I sent my thesis in to the Printer’s today. I thought I’d post it, just for posterity. If you don’t have time to read it, just note two features of it: 1. it’s long 2. it’s badass good, perhaps the most brilliant thing anyone’s ever written. Well, the first three chapters are. The last chapter about Vineland is really just an inconsequential ramble; it doesn’t offer much. Acutally, don’t even read it; it kind of takes away from the punch of the whole thing.
TTL, I’llgive away the surprise: don’t start reading it on the screen, cause I made you your very own copy. I figured, since you read GR at my bidding, and since you gave me Deleuze, you ought to have a hard copy on your bookshelf. Also, that way: no rush at all to read it.
But I really owe a lot to the whole Pinko’s crowd for the thinking in here. and for the diversion and procrastination that helped me write it.
It’s called Paranoid Organs, Schizoid Regimes: Capitalism and Pynchon
But it used to be called: Rising from the Ruggle

(that’s a word doc, so you know. do you want a .pdf?)

Jed –
first of all, a toast to you! Congratulations. Page count alone, I’m stunned.
second of all, should I read it? Should I read GR first? My housemate has just started it, and I think maybe now is as good a time as ever. I want to read GR, and I think I will, and I’ll start it tomorrow. Should I hold off on the thesis for a while in that case?
And if you Have a pdf version, that might be cool. My word program is shitty.

yeah, you should read GR. you’ll fuckin love it. know going in that there are a few parts which are incomprehensible, so don’t stress out your face reading it. but it is really funny and way intelligent.
I’d really appriciate it if you’d read my thesis either way. You could perhaps read them parallel to each other. In some ways, it might make GR a whole lot easier to read; for example, chapter 3 of my thesis has a very simple, structualist diagram of the metaphysical (?) relationships between the a few of the more main characters, which would help a lot in reading, I think. But, if you feel comfortable with GR, then you might get more out of my thesis by reading GR first. So it’s really a matter of how you feel like going about it.
But, if you are interested, you are MORE than welcome to come to my presentation, which is a week from tomorrow (thurs. dec 6) at 5. It’s being held at Prof. Foley’s house, so it’ll be…strange…and laid back. And then we can celebrate.
Here’s the .pdf

Or, you could just read the thesis without any GR, and I’d be interested to know how much of it makes any sense without GR. Because most people haven’t read that book.

Sorry to be obsessive about giving directions for how to deal with the existence of this thesis, but I guess that the whole project was born out of obsession.
What I meant by the above comment is that you should read GR, cause it’s a good book, but that I no-one’s under any obligation to read the thesis. “I’d appreciate” means just that; I’d love it if you read it, but there’s no real need to. If you do read it, then you are under obligation to give me some reactions. But it shouldn’t be a thing that’s “I ought to do this for Jed” for anyone. Except the people in the English department, who should give me an award for it.

Meaning, thanks for putting it up, and I’ll definitely read it when I get a chance — I shouldn’t read these copies though? should wait for hard copy instead? I’m writing a Deleuze/lit paper myself now, so maybe I should steal some ideas from you now for how to do it.

yah then start it now online. it’s the same thing. I’ll mail it tomorrow.

The second chapter of this thesis won the english dpt. fall lit theory award. now I’m 75 bucks richer.

Hey man, I’ve only been reading bits and pieces so far, but jeez, I can see why this would win an award! It’s so well written, and I can tell you’ve reached an amazing degree of comprehension of all the theory. Fucking well done! What you gonna do now? You gathered enough decoded flows of capital to start your own publishing firm yet?

This is my goal: to write a few chapters about William Burrows, a chapter on Philip Dick, and a chapter about Ellison and then have a book. We’ll see if life takes me there. I’ll plug it, maybe.
